Put those scales in the bin
Put those scales in the bin
Summer can be a pretty tough time with weight chat hiding around every corner. Diets, detoxes, gym challenges, and cleanses bombard us and try to lure us in with their empty promises: lose 5kg in 2 weeks etc etc blah blah blah….
Here’s a brief background as to why the number on the scales doesn’t mean sh*t:
Research has consistently proven people in larger bodies can be healthy, and people in smaller bodies can be unhealthy. A large study of over 40,000 people measured participants cardio-metabolic health (i.e. their heart health and risk of diabetes) and also their body mass index (BMI). They found nearly 50% of participants who were considered overweight, and 36% who were considered obese were cardio-metabolically healthy! And yet 30% of participants who were considered to be a ‘healthy’ body weight were found to be cardio-metabolically unhealthy! Definitely goes to show you can’t judge someone’s health by their body size or BMI.
Your healthy habits are far more important to your health than the number on your scales. Studies have proven people who engage in healthy behaviours such as moving your body regularly, eating well- including plenty of fruit, veggies, and whole foods, drinking in moderation and not smoking, have less risk of disease, regardless of their body size.
Everyone has their own genetic blueprint. Just like we have lots of different dog breeds like poodles, bulldogs and mastiffs, humans too come in different sizes, shapes, and colours. You may not love your body, but respect your body and appreciate it has a weight where it naturally likes to sit.
Let’s be honest, it’s pretty demotivating when you put in the hard yards of eating well and exercising regularly, and the scales have nothing to show for it. Its pretty tempting to throw the towel in, BUT you know you have felt so much better for making these changes. Why not keep going and just stop tracking the number all together?
Your worth is not defined by the number on the scales. Period. You’re not any more desirable, healthy, or a better person fit into societies ‘ideal’ body weight. It’s on the inside that matters, and no amount of weight you lose is going to make you a better person. Anyone that tells you otherwise should not be worthy of your time.
So, are you ready to throw the scales yet? We challenge you to take the leap, and instead focus on how you feel. How’s your energy levels when you eat well and move your body regularly? What foods make you feel energised after eating? How do you sleep, and what is your mood doing? These are all aspects of your life that should matter to you, rather than a worthless number on the scales.
