What is Intuitive eating?

Are you looking to improve your health and nutrition but don't want to jump onto yet again another diet? We hear you and we see you. A reminder that diets don't only not work, but they can cause both physical and mental damage.

Thankfully there are far more effective approaches to nutrition and health, and Intuitive Eating is what we consider the gold standard approach. Intuitive Eating is a framework developed by two dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch back in 1995. Evelyn and Elyse noticed diets weren't only not working for their clients, but they were actually causing harm. This gave them a spark to come up with an alternative approach: Intuitive Eating.

Instead of listening to external rules or cues (such as diets and food rules) to decide food choices, Intuitive Eating is a process of learning to listen and respond to the direct messages of your body. By doing so this honors your health, and meets your physiological and psychological needs. There are ten Intuitive Eating principles to be learnt and practiced:

  1. Reject the Diet Mentality

  2. Honor Your Hunger

  3. Make Peace with Food

  4. Challenge the Food Police

  5. Discover the Satisfaction Factor

  6. Feel Your Fullness

  7. Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness

  8. Respect Your Body

  9. Movement - Feel the Difference

  10. Honor Your Health - Gentle Nutrition

And the great part about it? It's an evidenced based model (meaning it's effectiveness is backed by scientific research). Take a look at the many positive effects of Intuitive Eating:
